The Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) is one of the largest universities in Germany and hosts about 33,000 students from more than 130 nations. JGU is one of 23 universities in Germany that have received approval for a so-called Cluster of Excellence as well as approval for a Graduate School of Excellence. The Cluster of Excellence on “Precision Physics, Fundamental Interactions and Structure of Matter” (PRISMA), which is primarily a collaboration between particle and hadron physicists, and the Graduate School of Excellence “MAterials Science IN MainZ” (MAINZ) are considered among the elite research groups worldwide. This success has been made possible in part through the unique large-scale research equipment available at Mainz University, such as the TRIGA light water research reactor and the MAMI electron accelerator, which both attract researchers from around the world.
The researchers from physics and chemistry within our excellence clusters, as well as scientists from biology, medicine, computer science, climate and weather research, as well as economics at JGU have a huge demand for high-performance computing. These groups are developing highly parallel code and also starts to have increasing demands for storage capacity and performance.
The Center for Data Processing (ZDV) is a central scientific institute of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. It provides those connected to the University - students and staff - with services in information and communication technologies. The ZDV is providing our researchers with high-performance computing systems and support in application development and application optimization (see the Gauß-Alliance and https://hpc.uni-mainz.de for further information). The research focus of the ZDV is on scalable, parallel storage systems, including, e.g., an Intel Parallel Computing Center for Lustre.
